About Hermits Peak Fire and Calf Canyon Fire
The Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon fires burned over 300,000 acres of New Mexico’s forests. These fires were started by the United States Forest Service, which initiated prescribed burns that quickly got out of control. The Forest Service used outdated information and needed to consider the current drought conditions or weather in the Mora, San Miguel, and Pecos areas. Unfortunately, this resulted in uncontrollable winds that caused the fires to spread rapidly, causing significant damage to the state’s forests and residents’ homes.
Mora/Las Vegas/Pecos Residents File Lawsuits Over Fire Information:
Residents of Mora, San Miguel, and Pecos affected by the recent Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon wildfires have filed a lawsuit in federal court in Albuquerque. They allege that the U.S. Forest Service failed to provide sufficient information about the blaze. The suit names the Forest Service and its regional office in Albuquerque as defendants.
